Bosch SMS-50E Reviews: Freestanding, 60cm wide, Multi Dishwasher

+ Matches my kitchen, quiet, washes well

- the regular cycle is slower than my old machine, which usually doesn't matter as I put it on at night but is a bit annoying when I do a lot of cooking and do an extra load in the day

+ Silence whilst in operation and cleanliness of dishes when complete

- The length of time it takes - 2 and half hours!

+ Very quiet in operation, cleans and dries well.

- Like most dishwashers, leaves a little residue water in dishes and glasses after completion of cycle. Haven't used the 'extra drying time' feature so don't know how well this works but guess the down-side is that it uses more electricity.

- my only comment is that the user instructions could be a little better does not give clear information regarding what each program function does for example ECO i can only assume this means economy wash

- Cutlery tray lid is very flimsy and went out of shape after only 2 washes. Wash cycle at 2.25 hours seems long

+ Very good quality build, compared to other brands, with all the options that came with this particular machine, they all work very well, good value for money

- Too many model variations, didn't get all the options as led to believe, poor description

+ Looks nice. Bosch products are very reliable. Simple to install.

- Black paint doesn't cost more than white paint so why does it cost more than the white version? who knows!

+ Everything sparkling! No water or limescale marks at all. The black colour makes the dishwasher look very stylish and sophisticated and not something to hide in a corner!

- Programmes seem quite long, even on eco option (2h25m) although you can choose half load option (which reduces it to 1h59m) and quick wash (only 30m).

- when you first set it up it does not dry everything completely, you need to adjust the drying setting then its fine.

+ The quick wash cycle only takes 30 mins and I am finding that I am able to use this cycle for most of my everyday washing up.
It is the quietest dish washing I have ever experienced.
The loading is very versitile.and therefore this machine holds a lot more than others.

- I would like to have seen one more wash cycle. There is nothing between 30 mins ans over 2 hours. Amedium wash of about 1 hour might be useful

+ plenty of cycle options. Quiet. Value for money.

- loading trays could be better thought out, i.e; difficult to load tall glasses\tumblers

+ Did not take long to find how our china fitted the machine best. I have never washed saucepans or large pyrex dishes in my dishwasher as these are in constant use.
The quickest wash is proficient for most things- heavily stained mugs (black tea and coffee) is not always cleared, but then it never has been easy.

- Drying is poor- was advised on previous dishwasher to leave the door ajar during this process (use a teacloth to prop it). Certainly speeds the process.

+ Easy to load and good to be able to remove the rack to put large oven shelves/BBQ grills in. Easy to use as it goes straight onto the last wash cycle you used, and just lets you press "start"...great for teenagers and partners who would otherwise shy away from the dishwasher. I also like the top rack for putting long cooking utensils on. The dishwasher is extremely quiet. I kept looking at it and listening to make sure it was still on! As a cold fill only, it only heats the water it needs, and uses less than other models. I am on a meter so this was important to me.

- The quick wash of 29 mins, although a great time, ( and one that swayed me into buying this particular model), didn't get hot enough to dry the pots or cutlery, it also didn't completely clean all the load. It left grainy residue on the plates, mugs and glasses. There is not a lot of choice with the cycles, which take from 2 hrs 38 to the ECO wash at 2 hrs 20. Even if you use the half load button, this only knocks 10 mins off the time. The sping loaded door is fairly strong, so it's no good trying to lower the door with one hand whilst having a load of pots in the other.

+ My kitchen is no longer messy with dishes, pots and pans and always looks tidy. Although I had to pay extra for a black dishwasher and Bosch being the only one I could find, it was worth the extra. I don't like integrated appliances and this way my black dishwasher matches everything I have ie: Fridge, Cooker and Microwave. FAB!!

- To my husbands disappointment it does not empty and put everything away in the cupboards. Hay-ho!!

+ This AAA rated machine is VERY quiet and uses very little water (12 litres)! A choice of 5 programmes plus a half load button - all of which have a great cleaning performance. It looks very smart in black and the time saved on washing up each evening is really appreciated. Highly recommended even if you don't have a family - you could put it on every couple of days when full. All with the added bonus that it leaves me more time in the evening for myself.

- Cutlery basket has fixed position, have seen other models where it slides along plate stands which would be helpful when loading very large objects

+ Simple to use, very quiet and efficient.

+ Practically silent running (apart from a very mild hum every now and then), and has made a real difference to the shine on our glassware. Delayed start timer so it can be run overnight is also very useful.

- Full cycle takes 2 and a half hours, although there is a 'quick wash' option but you can notice the difference in quality. Very minor point also that there is only enough room in the compartment for the powder to put in one dishwasher tablet.

+ Washes well generally with a sensible number of programs. Easy to use. Very quiet. In general it does well enough what it is designed to do, and I would still buy the same machine again in spite of the bad points below.

- Struggles with burnt on food or very dirty dishes unless you use the intensive program and the bottom rack only for these items. Does not always get all these items thoroughly clean therefore.
None of our plates, and particularly bowls, stack at all well on the racks, which are spaced too close together at too vertical an angle. In practical use, therefore, its place-setting capacity is less than stated, at least for us.

+ washes well

- much noisier than expected and than old machine. Doesn't dry that well, even when on extra dry setting. Quick wash barely dries at all. Takes along time to do a full wash, but at least the job is done thoroughly in the end.

+ Very quiet. Water quality sensor reduces cycle times if the dishes aren't very dirty. Machine can be programmed for extra hot final rinse to improve drying.

- Spacing in racks makes loading some of our crockery harder than our old dishwasher. Cutlery basket dividers have gaps that are too narrow for our cutlery handles

- Like so many modern products of this type, the wash cycles are long. Additionally, it is not possible to dry the dishes on the quick wash and auto daily settings.

+ It's easy to load and the trays have been well designed. Particularly welcome is a separate tray where sharp knives can be laid flat - this is a good safety feature. I also like the grid in the top of the cutlery basket which spaces the cutlery out ensuring it is washed more effectively. The machine is quiet in operation, and has good environmental credentials - it is triple A rated, and the eco setting is able to get the dirtiest dishes I can throw at it spotlessly clean. I also like the indicator lights on the front telling me when I need to top up the salt and rinse aid.

- The wash cycle takes a little long at 2 hours and 20 minutes on the eco setting. Its not a serious problem if you allow enough time. Also, this may be a universal problem with dishwashers...it was certainly the case with my last dishwasher as well... but the dishes still have a chemical smell when they come out of the machine. I feel it necessary to rinse them and leave them on a rack to dry. I don't mind doing this that much...it's certainly still a lot quicker than having to completely wash them by hand, but it would be nice not to have to. Also, the machine has functionality which I would never use, namely an option to delay the start time of the wash. However, I do not want to sound too negative. Generally, I rate this machine highly.

- Cups with a indentation bottom retain the water, even after the drying cycle

+ Good value for money; simple user interface; excellent cleaning performance.

- Front door is quite thick, adding to overall profile of machine - not so great in confined spaces

- Overall performance poor. Does not dry items on top self well at all. Lots of water stored. Am very disappointed.

+ This is my first dishwasher and I'm happy with it, it's very quiet, cleans well on the full cycles and has low water consumption.

- Negatives are, it doesn't completely dry the dishes (on any of the cycles) and the quick wash is only for dishes that are not really dirty eg glasses.

- Many programs have a long cycle time (there are no options between 30 mins and 2 hours cleaning time!)

+ Quiet, efficient dishwasher. I like the little tray on the top for large knives. Bottem tray is easier to load than the top. - Only a small number of cycles - which is all that I require.

- The length of the daily and eco washes is ridiculous - 2+ hours!! The short economy wash doesn't dry the dishes properly. The top tray ( as usual with dishwashers) is quite difficult to load and always seems to be full long before there is a full load in the bottem!

+ Not too complicated, very easy to use.

- Programme cycle too long, quick wash doesn't dry the dishes

- A little difficult to work out the cycle instructions, but the short cycle is excellent.

- the length of programmes is a cause for concern. The quick programme is only suitable for very light loads. All the other programmes run for more than 2 hours which seems pretty excessive. I don't like the cutlery basket with flaps, my cutlery does not fit the holes. the middle of cutlery basket does not have a divider in it so can only put small spoons in there. The outer casing is very flimsy.

+ It's very quiet. Wash performance is very good - not had to wash anything twice yet. Veyr useful

- It takes ages to go through the main cycle but this seems to be typical for dishwashers.

- Door opening - lack of timed programmes, one is 29mins and the other 2 and a half hours - why is their nothing in between. Why can't Bosch make rotating arms that can be clipped together/taken to bits to clean them out inside?

+ The only good point about the dishwasher is not noisy.

- My old Bosch dishwasher was very good lasted over 15 years. This one water stays on top of cups,mugs and saucepans. It does not clean ordinary glasses. Very disappointed and not happy at all .

+ It's great having the option of an eco wash to use less water and also a half load option. It's incredibly quiet, in fact I go back sometimes to check I put it on because our old machine you could hear in the next room!.
We have a big family and it washes all our dinner time dishes first time( if really grubby they go on the intensive cycle). A first rate buy in my opinion.
